Dental emergencies can happen at the most inopportune moments, and often, they seem to occur on the weekend or at night. Because we understand how scary and confusing a dental emergency can be, we offer emergency dental care to our patients in Oatley and the surrounding areas. We will be here when the unexpected happens; in the meantime, here’s what you need to know about dental emergencies.
What Is a Dental Emergency?
If you are in pain or your oral health is at risk, that’s a dental emergency. We want you to contact our dental clinic if you are experiencing any of the following issues:
Toothache – When your tooth pain is severe, use over-the-counter pain relievers such as naproxen or ibuprofen to ease the pain. You can also use an ice pack to numb your mouth.
Severe sensitivity to hot or cold temperatures – Avoid eating or drinking until we can determine the cause of this uncomfortable dental emergency.
Jaw swelling, especially if associated with a toothache – A swollen jaw can indicate an abscessed tooth. This severe infection must be treated immediately, so it’s best to contact us as soon as possible. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers to help.
Soft tissue injury to the lips, gums or cheek – Try to stop the bleeding by applying pressure to the injured area. Use an ice pack to help with pain and swelling as well.
Broken or cracked tooth – Clean the area by gently rinsing your mouth. If you can locate the broken piece of your tooth, bring it to our dental clinic.
Knocked-out tooth – Getting treatment quickly to save your tooth is essential. Gently try to place the tooth back in its socket without touching the roots. You can also put it in a glass of milk or inside your cheek.
Broken dental restoration, such as a filling, crown or bridge – Try to place your broken restoration back in its place and secure it with denture adhesive, dental cement or even toothpaste.
